Jack Buchanan, MD, PhD
Psychiatrist and Medical Director
My journey to psychiatry began with graduate work in environmental philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, where I learned that human “nature” is every bit as wild and amazing as the outdoor places I have come to know and love. Through my medical training, this sense of interconnectedness helped me forge a deeply holistic approach to care—one that holds humility, kindness, and curiosity above all else. It also inspired me to gain specializations in psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, and cultural and integrative psychiatry.
When I’m not providing specialty care at Amast, I practice general outpatient psychiatry at Hammock Health, and hold a part-time clinical appointment at UCSF in the Division of Acute and Emergency Services at San Francisco General.
